Lungworm – FAQ’s
It’s at this time of the year, when we get more rainy conditions, that our pets are more at danger of contracting Lungworm.
How does my dog get lungworm?
Dogs get lungworm when they eat an infected snail, slug or frog.
How will I know if my dog has lungworm?
Some dogs will cough or have breathing problems. In some cases, a dog will have a clotting problem which may only be detected if they get a cut or may be detected during surgery. Some dogs with lungworm and show no symptoms whatsoever.
Is there treatment for lungworm?
There is treatment for lungworm available. If you think your pet may have lungworm contact your vet immediately as left untreated it can be very serious and even fatal.
Can I stop my dog from getting lungworm?
There are a couple of things you can do to prevent your dog from getting lungworm. If you see snails in your garden be careful with your dog don’t allow them to eat them. Always check any bowls or toys that are left outdoors to make sure there are no snails or slugs on or in them.
If there are snails or slugs in your area it is a very good ideal to use a monthly preventative treatment. This is something your vet can give you advice on.
Can cats get lungworm?
Yes, cats can also get lungworm. If you are concerned your cat may have lungworm please contact your vet for advice.
