Microchipping

In Ireland, it is a legal requirement to have your dog microchipped. It is illegal to be given or sold a puppy or dog who has not been microchipped.

You are also required by law to be in possession of a Microchipping Certificate – this is a printed legal document confirming the information that is registered on a government-approved database.

To be fully compliant with the Microchipping of Dogs Regulations (MODR), you need to complete the following three steps:

Have your dog microchipped, by a registered implanter.

Have your details* registered on a Government approved database, (the microchip implanter is responsible for this).

Be in possession of a printed Microchipping Certificate.

* your phone number, address and email address – it is so important to update this information asap if you get a new phone, email address or move home!

There are currently four Government approved microchipping database providers in Ireland:

Animark

Fido

Irish Kennel Club

Microdog ID Ltd (Irish Coursing Club)

While not currently a legal requirement in Ireland, we strongly encourage you to have your cat microchipped too!
