The Irish Blue Cross Statement on ‘XL Bully Ban’

In response to the recent government announcement regarding the ban on XL bully-type dogs, The Irish Blue Cross is committed to supporting our community through this transition. Our primary concern is the welfare of both pets and their owners.

Starting October 1st, it will be illegal to import, breed, or re-sell XL Bullies, and from February 1st, 2025, owning these dogs will also be banned unless a certificate of exemption is obtained.

You can find further details on the ban here. We strongly encourage owners of XL bully-type dogs to ensure their pets are licensed, neutered, microchipped, and always leashed and muzzled in public.

We recognise the significant challenges this ban will place on the entire veterinary sector and the urgent need for increased investment in dog control departments.

The Irish Blue Cross already performs hundreds of dog neuters annually, with our neuter clinics booked several months in advance. Our charitable services are stretched to the limit, and this ban will create immense pressure not only on our resources but also on the resources of many other animal welfare organisations. However, we remain dedicated to supporting our XL bully clients and patients in any way we can.

The Irish Blue Cross will work alongside our animal welfare minded colleagues on the Department Of Rural and Community Development’s Dog Control Working Group to press for realistic options in relation to this ‘ban’.
