Meet Louise

We’re delighted to introduce you to Louise, one of the dedicated vets, at our Inchicore Clinic,  helping pets and their families through The Irish Blue Cross every day.

For Louise, a career in veterinary medicine was always on the cards. Her love and fascination with animals began as a child, when she was known for bringing home stray cats, dogs, injured baby birds and even the occasional starfish, determined to nurse them back to health. Ten years into her veterinary career, that same passion continues to drive her work every day.

At home, Louise shares her life with two rescue pets: Greg the cat and Burdie the cocker spaniel. Both had difficult starts in life but are now thriving and full of energy, keeping Louise busy and reminding her every day of the incredible difference a second chance can make.

Louise joined The Irish Blue Cross because she understands just how important the bond between people and their pets can be.

“I know the joy, comfort and companionship that animals bring to our lives,” she says. “As a child, my own family relied on The Irish Blue Cross, so I experienced firsthand the dedication, care and compassion shown by the vets and volunteers. Being able to help other families maintain that special bond with their pets means a great deal to me.”

One of the most rewarding parts of Louise’s role is seeing pets reunited with their owners after treatment.

“It’s always heartwarming to witness the happiness and relief when a beloved pet recovers and goes home. Those moments make everything worthwhile.”

Of course, veterinary work can also be challenging.

“Sometimes, despite everyone’s best efforts, some battles can’t be won. We invest so much care, hope and kindness into every patient, so it’s always difficult when a pet doesn’t get the outcome we were hoping for.”

No two days at the clinic are ever the same. Louise typically spends her mornings performing surgeries, including dental procedures and neutering operations, before moving on to consultations in the afternoon. Every day brings something different, and unexpected cases are never far away.

One patient who will always stay with Louise is Xena, a beautiful dog who arrived at the Inchicore clinic earlier this year feeling very unwell. Following tests, Xena was diagnosed with Addison’s disease. Thanks to the commitment of her owners and ongoing veterinary care, her condition was stabilised, and she has been thriving ever since.

If Louise could leave pet owners with one piece of advice, it would be this: “An itchy bottom isn’t always caused by worms. In dogs, it can sometimes be a sign of an underlying skin condition, so it’s always worth getting it checked if the problem persists.”
