How We Saved Luna’s Life

Luna is a beloved 3-year-old Bichon, who her family loves very much. Luna was rushed to The Irish Blue Cross following a horrific dog attack. She had sustained significant injuries to her abdomen and required urgent attention.

After an initial assessment, our team had to focus on the huge and life-threatening wound on her tummy. Dog bites carry risk of serious infection as well as devastating injuries to skin tissue. After a few days it became apparent that there were significant lacerations, and the affected tissue was starting to die.

To stop the spread of infection we had no other option but to remove the dead tissue leaving a large wound. This wound was too large to close, so a decision was made to allow it to heal itself with constant attention given to Luna to make sure she was comfortable.

Our surgery team still had to battle against the infection on the wound left by the dog bite, which needed constant monitoring.

The entire nursing team were instrumental to ensure the wound was managed well and that Luna was nurtured back to full health. As a result, the wound responded and eventually healed after several weeks of intense care and checkups, leaving Luna with nothing but a small scar.

Luna’s owners were incredible and supported her every step of the way as she needed to visit The Irish Blue Cross clinic multiple times per week for us to manage the wound and ensure it successfully healed.

Our veterinary team were delighted to return Luna to her owners after recovering from such a horrendous ordeal.

Rose Kavanagh, Luna’s owner said: “Luna is in flying form, and back to her playful best! The staff at The Irish Blue Cross are brilliant, we could not fault them. Luna got to know all the vets and nurses, as she was such a regular over a long period of time. We thought that we lost her forever. We were amazed at the love and attention that she got. The care and expertise they showed Luna is second to none.”

Helping patients like Luna is what we do. Without our charitable services, and your support, poor Luna would have had nowhere to turn.
